About Foster

Foster is the gateway to the Gippsland’s spectacular natural attractions and only 30mins away from Wilsons Promontory National Park and only a short drive from the popular tourist destinations of Shallow Inlet, Corner Inlet, Sandy Point and Waratah Bay.
Foster is 174km south east of Melbourne on the South Gippsland Highway of Victoria, Australia and is a thriving town that links the Wilsons Promontory with the rest of Victoria and is a dairy and grazing town.

Originally called Stockyard Creek, it was a resting place for drovers travelling but all changed with the discovery of gold in the 1880’s that lead to a gold rush. The area was renamed in 1879 to Foster when the town became established.

Foster town ship is part of Victoria’s best kept secrets and blessed with magnificent beaches, forests and a caring community. The district has famous and award-winning cheeses, cool climate wines, fruits, beef and lamb, herbs and is full of wonderful rich rural products.

This ‘Prom Country’ has unspoilt natural beauty that is full of outdoor activities with its coastal wilderness, surf beaches and abundant wildlife. This town of Foster attracts over 1.1 million visitors a year and is plentiful for accommodating a long stay or short stop over, either way you will enjoy what Foster has to offer.
